School's Back, But Summer Isn't Over: After-School Activities Around the Treasure Valley

School may be back in session for many Treasure Valley families, but summer isn't quite finished yet!

August still gives us warm evenings, plenty of daylight and a few more weeks to enjoy our favorite summer activities before fall officially takes over.

Whether your family is back to school, homeschooling, juggling preschool schedules or simply settling into a new late-summer routine, here are a few easy Treasure Valley adventures perfect for those late afternoons and evenings.

After School Activities

Pack Dinner & Head to the Park

Weeknight dinner doesn't have to happen around the kitchen table.

Grab takeout, pack sandwiches or bring whatever you were already planning for dinner and head to a nearby park.

Settlers Park, Kleiner Park, Discovery Park, Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park and Ann Morrison Park all offer plenty of room to eat, play and burn off some end-of-day energy.

Keep it simple: Dinner + playground + home before bedtime. That's an adventure in our book.

Make it an Ice Cream Night

Sometimes you don't need an activity at all.

Pick a local ice cream shop and surprise everyone with an after-dinner cone. Better yet, choose somewhere you've never tried before!

Squeeze In a Few More Splash Pad Days

The swimsuits don't need to disappear quite yet!

Take advantage of the remaining warm August afternoons with a quick trip to a local splash pad or water feature.

An hour of water play after a long day can feel like a miniature summer vacation without requiring an entire Saturday.

Make a Library Stop

Need something calmer?

Stop by your local library, browse for new books, check out the children's area or see what activities are happening that week.

Libraries are especially nice when everyone needs to get out of the house but doesn't necessarily need more stimulation.

Take an Evening Walk or Bike Ride

Now that some of the smoke has cleared and the evenings are feeling a little more enjoyable, take advantage of it.

Choose a neighborhood path, park or another favorite walking area and head out after dinner.

You don't need to cover miles. Sometimes 30 minutes outside is enough to reset the entire evening.

Go Watch the Sunset

This one costs nothing and requires almost no planning.

Grab a blanket, snacks and maybe a special drink for the adults, then head somewhere with a view.

The Boise Depot, Camel's Back Park and several spots throughout the foothills offer beautiful places to watch an Idaho summer sunset.

Turn a Weeknight Into an Event Night

August isn't finished with us yet!

The Western Idaho Fair begins August 21, and other concerts, markets and community events continue around the Treasure Valley throughout the month.

Sometimes moving the usual weekend activity to a weeknight is exactly what everyone needs.

Keep it Simple

Not every family outing needs reservations, a packed diaper bag, matching outfits and six hours blocked off on the calendar.

Pick up ice cream.

Eat dinner at the park.

Let the kids play in the water for an hour.

Go watch the sunset.

These little weekday adventures are an easy way to enjoy the last few weeks of summer while still settling back into a routine.
