After School Adventures Around the Treasure Valley
September is that funny in-between season where school is back, routines are settling in, but the weather is still way too nice to head straight home every afternoon. ☀️🍂
And an after-school adventure doesn't have to mean planning an entire outing. Sometimes you just need an hour outside, somewhere for the kids to run, and maybe a snack on the way home.
Here are a few easy ideas around the Treasure Valley for those afternoons when everyone needs a change of scenery.
Treasure Valley After School Adventures
Pick a New to You Park
Instead of heading to your usual neighborhood playground, pick one you've never visited before.
Make it even easier: grab an after-school snack, let the kids play for an hour and head home before dinner.
A few areas worth exploring include Settlers Park in Meridian, Kleiner Park in Meridian, Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park, Eagle Island State Park and Ann Morrison Park in Boise.

Take a Short Greenbelt Walk
You don't need to commit to miles of walking to enjoy the Boise River Greenbelt.
Pick a convenient access point, walk or bike for 20–30 minutes, turn around and call it good.
September evenings are especially nice for this because you're getting cooler temperatures without the early sunsets we'll have later this fall.
Make it a Treat Run
Sometimes the adventure is literally just getting ice cream.
Let the kids choose a treat, find somewhere outside to eat it and enjoy the fact that you left the house without needing to pack for a six-hour excursion.

Go Feed Your Curiosity, Not the Ducks
Find a pond, nature area or park and let the kids explore.
Look for ducks, collect interesting leaves, watch squirrels, find rocks or make up a little scavenger hunt as you walk.
Just remember: if you encounter ducks or geese, skip feeding them bread and enjoy watching them instead.
For younger kids, this can somehow turn a 15-minute walk into a VERY important 45-minute investigation of one stick.
Stop at a Library
Not every after-school adventure needs to be outdoors.
Treasure Valley libraries are an easy option when it's too hot, smoky, rainy or everyone simply needs a calmer afternoon.
Browse books, check the children's area, see what's happening that week and let everyone decompress before heading home.

Have a Snack Date
One snack. One drink. Somewhere you normally wouldn't stop.
A bakery, coffee shop or café can turn an ordinary weekday afternoon into something that feels special without requiring much planning.
Stay Out for Sunset
As September moves along, sunset starts arriving earlier, which actually makes catching one much more realistic with kids.
Pack dinner, grab takeout or simply head somewhere with a good view after you eat.
Keep it Simple
The goal isn't to turn every weekday into an elaborate childhood memory.
Sometimes everybody just needs to get out of the house for an hour.
Try a different playground. Grab a treat. Walk somewhere new. Stop at the library. Watch the sunset.
September gives us a pretty great little window between the chaos of summer and the colder, darker evenings ahead, so we might as well use it!
